The 5G TALKS - Episode 5: meet NOKIA
- Who is Nokia? Meet the company
We create the critical networks and technologies to bring together the world’s intelligence, across businesses, cities, supply chains and societies.
With our commitment to innovation and technology leadership, driven by the award-winning Nokia Bell Labs, we deliver networks at the limits of science across mobile, infrastructure, cloud, and enabling technologies.
Adhering to the highest standards of integrity and security, we help build the capabilities we need for a more productive, sustainable and inclusive world.
Our communications service provider customers support more than 6.4 billion subscriptions with our radio networks and our enterprise customers have deployed over 1,300 industrial networks worldwide.
- What is Nokia’s role in 5G-MOBIX?
Nokia joined the 5G-MOBIX consortium with the goal to provide and deploy a state-of-the-art 5G NSA (Non-Standalone Access) and SA (Standalone Access) network, covering the Spain-Portugal border area (Tui – Valença). This network will allow to test innovative Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) technologies and services in a cross border environment, and examine the implications of 5G and its role in the future of autonomous driving.
This infrastructure must be capable to fulfill the most stringent requirements and KPIs for a selection of automated driving scenarios and use cases, allowing road users and traffic managers to share information and use it to coordinate their actions. This cooperative element – enabled by digital connectivity between vehicles and between vehicles and transport infrastructure – is expected to significantly improve road safety, traffic efficiency and comfort of driving, by helping the driver to take the right decisions and adapt to the traffic situation.
Nokia is also responsible for the development of Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) applications that enable remote driving of public transport vehicles, while assuring performance, efficiency and road user safety.
- How is Nokia contributing (in general) to the deployment of 5G and/or autonomous driving?
As a leading 5G infrastructure provider Nokia wants to meet transport and automotive industry needs with reliable Cellular-V2X (C-V2X) communication technology and data driven business models for the deployment of safe and efficient transport systems. NOKIA focuses on establishing key 5G capabilities in the networks, creating a secure, scalable edge application framework and enabling innovative use cases, new ecosystem cooperation, and data driven business models.
Nokia is also a founding member of the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA, https://5gaa.org), a global cross-industry organisation of companies from the automotive, technology, and telecommunications industries (ICT), working together to develop end-to-end solutions for future mobility and transport services. Numerous studies and papers have been developed and released together by the 5GAA members, working together to enable vehicles sharing information to make transport safer, greener, and more enjoyable are at our doorstep. 5G will be able to better carry mission-critical communications in the domain of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS), for safer and more efficient driving as well as further support of automated driving.
- Considering Nokia’s specific contribution in the Spain-Portugal corridor, which use cases would you highlight?
The Spain-Portugal corridor covers the complete value chain including car manufacturers, telecom companies, public administrations and research institutions. The main addressed use cases will rely on the benefits of 5G technology to allow private automated vehicles to succeed in the different inter-urban complex scenarios (e.g. Vigo to Porto) while other use cases include interurban scenarios for public transport and last mile EV automated shuttle vehicles.
