Objectives

5G-MOBIX aims to match the benefits of 5G technology with advanced Connected Automated Mobility (CAM) use cases in order to enable innovative, previously unfeasible, automated driving applications, both from a technical and a business perspective.

The goal of 5G-MOBIX is achieved through the following objectives:

Requirements

Requirements for CAM using 5G

5G-MOBIX formulates a comprehensive set of 5G technological requirements for advanced CAM, relevant for the automotive, telecom, IT and services industries, as well as for R&D and public authorities. 5G-MOBIX conceptualizes the 5G reference framework tackling the overall lifecycle, from design to deployment of CAM and 5G network services.

x-Border trials

Deployment of CAM use cases as well as 5G road infrastructure and vehicles on x-border corridors and at local trial sites

Eight trials have been selected to cover most challenging scenarios and use cases (urban and highway, including cross-border) to ensure the testing and validation in a diverse set of 5G corridors rolled out in Europe, as well as Asia (China and South Korea) to further enhance alignment of views on 5G.

Analysis

Cost benefit analysis and impact assessment of 5G technologies and their deployment

5G-MOBIX develops and tests automated vehicle functionalities using 5G core technological innovations along multiple cross-border corridors and urban trial sites, under conditions of vehicular traffic, network coverage, service demand, as well as considering the inherently distinct legal, business and social local aspects. 5G-MOBIX will use the data and experiences of x-border corridors and trial sites for analysis and assessment.

Assessment

Assessment of new business opportunities for 5G-enabled CAM

A comprehensive breakdown of the variety of costs associated with 5G roll-out is performed, and the value chain that arises from 5G/CAM services and associated business models is estimated.

Standardisation

Recommendations on standardisation and regulatory gaps

The trials results, namely on interoperability tests between different systems and components, contribute to standardisation and 5G-MOBIX cooperates with standardization bodies. An analysis of the EU regulatory landscape for autonomous vehicles highlights the standardisation and regulatory gaps.

Expansion

Scaling up scenarios and recommendations for EU-wide 5G corridor deployment and beyond

5G-MOBIX defines critical scenarios needing advanced connectivity provided by 5G, and the required features, to enable some advanced CAM use cases built on the cross-border and urban trials results. Recommendations and options are provided to policy makers for 5G deployment in European transport infrastructures.
