The 2nd Workshop on 5G-Enabled Safety and Support Services for Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility @ VTC2022-Spring

The 2022 IEEE 95th Vehicular Technology Conference: VTC2022-Spring will be held in Helsinki, Finland 19 - 22 June, 2022. This semi-annual flagship conference of IEEE Vehicular Technology Society will bring together individuals from academia, government, and industry to discuss and exchange ideas in the fields of wireless, mobile, and vehicular technology. IEEE VTC2022-Spring will feature world-class plenary speakers, tutorials, technical as well as application sessions, and an innovative Industry Track, which will feature panels and presentations with industry leaders sharing their perspectives on the latest technologies.

During the Conference, on 19 June, The 2nd Workshop on 5G-Enabled Safety and Support Services for Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility co-organised by 5G-HEART, 5G-ROUTES and 5G-MOBIX projects, and the Celtic-Next 5G-SAFE-Plus project will be held.

Safety and support services running on top of 5G network infrastructures provide a great opportunity to enable Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) for automotive and transport verticals in a variety of road conditions and operational environments. As the rollouts of commercial 5G networks continue all over the world, the increasing coverage and continuously evolving capabilities of the technology make it an ideal connectivity platform for a variety of Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication scenarios. Critical network-based services enhancing the road traffic safety can exploit the Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) services offered by 5G. Moreover, non-critical support services could leverage on Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) and Massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC) services provided by 5G networks and facilitate the operation of the intelligent road transport systems as well as the comfort and wellbeing of the drivers and passengers.
The aim of the workshop is to exploit these opportunities from several perspectives. First, the workshop distributes the latest results assessing the suitability of the currently standardised 5G functionalities in a variety of CCAM scenarios. Second, the workshop discusses the gaps identified in the existing 5G capabilities when it comes to the heterogeneous requirements, stemming from these scenarios, and offers new technological solutions to fill the identified gaps. Third, the workshop considers novel services and concepts that 5G networks would enhance the safety and performance of CCAM.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

  • 5G technologies and networks for the automotive and transport verticals
  • Cellular V2X (C-V2X) communications
  • Network slicing supporting CCAM
  • Licensed, shared and unlicensed spectrum models supporting CCAM
  • Utilisation of sensor network and IoT infrastructures for CCAM
  • Quality of Service/Experience (QoS/QoE) assurance and predictive QoS for CCAM
  • CCAM privacy and security issues
  • Critical network-based road traffic safety services utilising URLLC
  • Non-critical network-based support services utilising eMBB and mMTC
  • Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS)
  • Mixed traffic scenarios involving connected and non-connected users and/or vehicles
  • Vulnerable Road User (VRU) protection
  • Coping with severe (e.g., arctic) weather conditions
  • Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) for V2X applications
  • AI/ML for V2X communication and networking
  • Positioning enhancements for (safety-critical) V2X
  • 5G roaming architectures for cross-border C-V2X
  • 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) for C-V2X service continuity
  • New innovative business models and use cases for V2X and CCAM
  • Testbeds, experimental evaluations and field trials
